A Partnership Rooted in Growth
Since the 1980s, Nordic countries have partnered with Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) to strengthen Tanzania’s agricultural education, research, and workforce development. From long-standing academic exchanges and joint research efforts to technical support, this partnership has helped nurture a generation of Tanzanian agricultural professionals.
In the 2010s, this collaboration expanded with the establishment of SUGECO (Sokoine University Graduate Entrepreneurs Cooperative)—a hub promoting innovation, agribusiness incubation, and youth-led entrepreneurship. Together, SUA and SUGECO embody how Nordic-Tanzanian collaboration is driving transformation in agriculture.
Spotlight on Innovation and Skills Development
As part of Nordic Week 2025, a day of activities was held in Morogoro to showcase the achievements of this partnership and explore new frontiers for cooperation. The program highlighted three key pillars:
- Scaling Agribusiness: Through site visits and exhibitions, Nordic ambassadors explored how Tanzanian youth are scaling up food production, adopting new technologies, and creating market-ready products—with inspiration and insights drawn from Nordic innovations.
- Youth Skills and Entrepreneurship: Informal dialogues brought together young agripreneurs and exchange students to share experiences, pitch ideas, and engage Nordic diplomats in open, solution-oriented conversations. These sessions underscored the importance of cross-cultural learning, peer support, and access to mentorship in shaping Tanzania’s future agri-leaders.
- Institutional Partnerships: Visits to SUA’s veterinary and agricultural facilities provided a glimpse into how investment in research, innovation, and gender-inclusive education is strengthening the foundation of Tanzania’s
Symbolic Acts, Real Commitments
In addition to field visits, Nordic ambassadors met with the Regional Commissioner of Morogoro and toured the Tanzania Tree Seed Agency, where they engaged in tree-planting and knowledge-sharing around reforestation and environmental conservation. These symbolic gestures reflect the broader Nordic commitment to sustainability, climate-smart agriculture, and green growth.
Looking Ahead: Planting Seeds of Transformation
The day’s program—organized by the Embassy of Denmark with strong coordination from other Nordic embassies—was more than a series of site visits or dialogues. It was a living example of how long-term partnerships can foster innovation, empower youth, and create pathways for sustainable economic growth.
As Tanzania continues to prioritize agriculture as a key driver of development, the Nordic-Tanzanian collaboration remains a model for how shared values—education, equity, innovation, and sustainability—can yield results that matter.
